Olio vs Flax: How the Two Compare for SNF Admissions and Beyond

A side by side look at Olio and Flax for skilled nursing operators. Both platforms screen inbound referrals well. This guide covers where each platform is stronger, how outcomes data helps a facility earn more referrals and negotiate with health plans, and why post-discharge coordination matters for facilities held accountable for 30-day readmissions.

Olio vs Flax

Olio and Flax both help a skilled nursing facility screen inbound referrals quickly, and a team evaluating either one will find the admissions basics covered. Flax goes further on the paperwork around a stay, with MDS auto-fill and billing appeals. Olio goes further into census management, outbound referrals, post-discharge visibility. Most notably, Olio gives your team outcomes data to bring to hospital and health plan meetings, so you can show your results, earn more referrals, and negotiate stronger contracts. This comparison reflects public product materials as of October 13, 2026.

Where Olio and Flax are evenly matched

Admissions is where the documented capabilities line up. Both platforms offer the following:

  • Inbound referral intake from hospital portals, with screening against your own facility criteria

  • High-cost medication flagging

  • Insurance eligibility verification

  • Sex offender registry screening

  • A push of inbound referral data into PointClickCare

  • A mobile-optimized experience

  • Security that holds up in vendor review

If your main question is which platform will screen an inbound referral well, either one will. The more useful questions are how many referrals reach you and what happens after the admission decision.

Where Flax is stronger

Flax is built around the paperwork that surrounds a skilled nursing stay, and three areas favor it.

First, Flax lists PDPM estimates among its capabilities in its own comparison table.

Second, Flax uses existing clinical notes to auto-fill the MDS, which saves nursing and MDS staff time at intake. Olio's AI summaries support MDS documentation review, but it is not described as an auto-fill tool.

Third, Flax includes a billing module that builds claims and drafts appeals backed by clinical evidence.

Flax also lists occupancy planning in its own materials, so census is not a clean line between the two platforms.

Where Olio separates: more referrals, and the episode after discharge

Olio also follows the resident through the stay, into the outbound referral, and out to the 30-day readmission window. Based on public materials as of October 13, 2026, these are the capabilities that differ:

The first capability is the big one. Referrals are the lifeblood of a SNF. Many software companies like Flax promise to speed up referral processing, and do that well, but processing referrals faster cannot actually get you more referrals. Olio gives SNFs real-time outcomes data they can take to their meetings with referral partners and health plans. This data helps SNFs get into narrow networks to get more referrals and negotiate better contracts.

Olio also keeps your team connected to the home health providers caring for your discharged patients. Your staff see updates on patient progress, confirmation that home health showed up, and early signs that something is going wrong at home. That connection gives your team a chance to intervene before a readmission happens, not weeks afterward.

Faster referrals and more referrals are different goals

Faster decision-making helps with the referrals that land on your desk. It does not change how many hospitals and health plans choose to send referrals to you.

Referral partners make that choice on outcomes. Hospital case managers and health plans look at your 30-day readmission rate, your length of stay, and how your residents do after they go home. Most facilities have little way to show these results, so the conversation stays anecdotal and the hospital sends the next resident to the friendly SNF down the street.

Olio dramatically changes that conversation. Olio Insights turns your day-to-day activity into proof you can bring to the table.

Bring your results to a hospital meeting and the case management team has a reason to send you more of its patients. Bring the same data to a health plan and you have facts to support a stronger contract negotiation.

Why the post-discharge gap carries a cost

Skilled nursing facilities are accountable for what happens after a resident leaves. Under the SNF Value-Based Purchasing program, CMS withholds 2% of a facility's Medicare fee-for-service Part A payments and pays back a share based on performance, which is measured on 30-day readmissions.

The clinical picture explains why. Research published on PMC found that 1 in 4 patients discharged to a SNF are readmitted within 30 days. A separate PMC study found that only about 20% of patients discharged home from a SNF received home health care, and those who did had lower 30-day readmission rates. Knowing whether home health showed up, and acting when it did not, is where a facility can change the result. We cover that gap in more detail in our piece on the post-discharge visibility gap.

Which platform fits which facility

Flax is a strong fit if your priorities are fast inbound referral review, PDPM estimates at the point of decision, MDS auto-fill for your nursing team, and help with claims and appeals.

Olio is the better fit if you want to grow the number of referrals you receive. It gives you the outcomes data to take to hospitals and health plans, which matters most if your facility carries value-based or managed care exposure or competes with other buildings for the same referral partners. It is also the better fit if you want one platform that covers the inbound referral, the stay, the outbound referral, and the 31 days that follow.

Five questions to ask in any demo

Use these with Olio, Flax, or any other vendor.

  1. Can you show an inbound referral from our busiest hospital portal, from intake to decision, with our own screening criteria loaded?

  2. What outcomes data can I show to a hospital case management team or a health plan to win more referrals and negotiate our contract?

  3. How do we find out whether home health made the first visit, and who is alerted if it did not happen?

  4. Can we see 30-day readmissions by facility, by referring hospital, and by home health partner?

  5. What is the price per building, in writing? Olio lists its price at $500 per building per month on its skilled nursing facilities page. We did not find published pricing for Flax.
